It’s a very busy season at Noah’s Ark Animal Welfare Association. Construction is underway of the community’s new animal shelter building. Noah’s Ark has been tasked with funding the interior finishes once the building shell is completed in September.

For the past 20 years, Noah’s Ark Animal Welfare Association, a 501c3 nonprofit, has cared for the homeless and abandoned animals of the Trinidad area and also provides low-cost pet services. The dream of adequate and comfortable facilities for animals, staff, volunteers, and customers while seemingly impossible at times, will become a long-awaited reality in 2020.

To jump-start a season of fundraising events, the Noah’s Ark Thrift Store will be hosting a store-wide summer blowout sale on Friday, August 23 and Saturday, August 24 at the store location, 147 E. Main Street, combined with a giant furniture sale at the Hughes Lumber building located at 127 E. Plum St. In addition, a raffle will be held at the store for a 43” flat-screen TV and an Apple watch, with the drawing for winners to be held at 3:30 pm on Saturday. Information will also be available both days for ways to help fund the new shelter, including Memorial Garden gift bricks and pavers, which may be purchased in memory of a beloved pet or pet owner, or in honor of a living pet. Prices start at $50.00.

The Noah’s Ark Thrift Store has contributed significant monetary support to the shelter for over five years and during that time, has grown to become an integral part of the community. The store not only offers an affordable selection of merchandise to its customers, it has implemented an extensive recycling program for unusable clothing, shoes, aluminum cans, ink cartridges, and cardboard.  Additionally, the store lends support to a number of community organizations and non-profits, including Mt. San Rafael Hospital, Sangre de Cristo Hospice & Palliative Care, and several area schools.

Plans are also in the works for “Paws in the Park”, NAAWA’s annual pet friendly event.  Paws in the Park will take place at the Farmer’s Market in Cimino Park on Saturday, August 31st from 8 am to noon. The event features a vaccine clinic, microchip clinic, agility course, and multiple pet friendly vendors. Included in this year’s event will be an expanded “Dinky Doggy Derby”, an exhibition of the extraordinary talents of dinky doggies who will dash to the finish line and into the arms of their owners. The derby is open for entry to all dogs that weigh under 25 pounds; cost of derby entry is only $5 and there are four classes of entry. Derby winners will receive a tall trophy or a medal.

On Saturday, September 7th, the much-anticipated “Downton Tabby” will take place from 2 to 5 pm at the beautiful Bloom Mansion Gardens at The Trinidad History Museum. In true “Downton” fashion, this high tea event promises a delightful afternoon of food, games, and conversation. The event features a costume contest, a mustache contest, a croquet tournament, a silent auction, and much more. Tickets are now available at the Noah’s Ark Thrift Store. Tickets are just $30 each: must be 18 years and up to attend.
