On Saturday, Sept. 14, dozens of Trinidad locals and tourists alike attended the Trinidad Round Association’s first annual Chili & Salsa Festival at the Trinidad Community Farmer’s Market in Cimino Park.
Each entry was judged on its own merit in one of the three categories of Red Chili, Green Chili and Salsa. Each judged entry was rated by the characteristics of texture, aroma, flavor, presentation, and spiciness.
Attendees of the farmer’s market decided The People’s Choice Award. TRA board members sold $5 sampling kits with a People’s Choice ballot and judging began after the “official contest” judges sampled and turned in their votes.
The winner of the People’s Choice Award went to Donald Gonzales for green chili, Tony Martinez for red chili, and Scott Zeches for salsa. TRA Board President Frank Cantoria expressed his appreciation for the great turn-out; “This was the first chili contest, and it was pretty successful. We look forward to having the chili contest again next year.”
