Primero senior Lance Peters is having a phenomenal 2020 boys golf season with back-to-back tournament wins and an individual league championship title among his latest accomplishments.
On Monday, Sept. 14, Peters came in first at the second Tri-Peaks League Tournament in Pueblo. He followed this up with an additional first place finish at the Rye Invitational on Thursday, September 17.
And with his strong performances at league play throughout the season, the latest two consecutive tournament wins helped Peters clinch the Tri-Peaks League individual boys golf champion title.
“Lance’s ball striking was on point today,” said Primero boys golf coach Gerald Duran, following Peter’s win on September 17. “His approach shots landed softly on the green, like a butterfly with sore feet. It was great to watch Lance, and all the athletes in his group, play such a wonderful round of golf.”
While Peters has competed in varsity boys golf throughout his high school career, this is his first year doing so representing Primero. And according to his father Tim Peters, working with coach Duran has made a huge impact on Peters’ performance this season.
“A lot of credit needs to go to his new coach, Gerald Duran,” said Peters. “Lance has always had an incredible physical talent. I call him a ‘freak’ on the course because he is so long. Gerald has put Lance on another level mentally. He is playing with so much more intelligence and control that when he is on, there is no doubt he is heading to the next level. With Gerald keeping Lance’s head in the right place, we have a good chance to actually win State for Primero.”
Peters next competes in the Boys 3A Region 1 tournament on September 22, before advancing to play in the State tournament in October.
