—Ed. note: Below is a statement from Trinidad Mayor Phil Rico with respect to the pandemic virus known popularly as coronavirus. The statement was received on Friday, March 13.
From the mayor’s office:
The City of Trinidad administration and city council are aware of the Coronavirus epidemic. We are conferring with the Las Animas and Huerfano County Health Department and the Las Animas County Emergency Coordinator. They advise that it is not a matter of if, but when, we will have local cases of infection.
Acknowledging that, we will continue to monitor the situation and work to make appropriate decisions for the health of the residents of Trinidad by following the recommendations of the Las Animas and Huerfano County Health Department and Las Animas County Emergency Management and working with the Las Animas County Commissioners.
At this time the health department and emergency coordinator are asking everyone to take extra precautions to avoid the spread of the virus such as washing hands throughout the day, disinfecting surfaces, practicing social distancing, and working from home if possible. Some things that may be affected are meetings, social gatherings, sporting events and schools.
Even though this epidemic is very concerning, if we take the necessary recommendations we can minimize the risk to our citizens and visitors.
Mayor of Trinidad
