As collectors of stories and information, The Chronicle-News has the pleasure every now and then to receive snapshots of our greater community’s past. Recently, that pleasure afforded itself in the form of a photo of a Hoehne baseball team sent to us by Greeley West High School braillist and vision para Tonya Benich, a cousin of Tony and Connie Hass.
“My husband, Rob Benich, is the son of Thomas (Tom) and Charlotte (Day) Benich,” Benich writes. “We found a picture of the team from when Tom was coach. A year is not on the picture but it was taken by John O’Connor.”
Names were not included on the photo but Benich brought up the nostalgia it may bring to those who were around during that time.
“We have no names of the players,” Benich said, “but we thought it would be fun for the community to see if they have a loved one in the picture.”
Benich also noted that they have several pieces of memorabilia from the team.
“We have two baseballs that were signed by players,” said Benich. “On one ball it has LAC League hand written on it with the scores of the games with Primero, Sopris, La Veta, and Aguilar. On the other, it has LAC Champions with names of the players.”
Lastly, Benich noted that she is proud of her father and hopes that others will enjoy remembering their time at Hoehne High.
“We are very proud of dad (Tom) and all his accomplishments in his life,” said Benich. “He was an amazing man his entire life. Hopefully, some of the players and their family and relatives are still around and would love to share this time of their lives. I know the Hoehne school would be proud of their heritage.”
