Domenic Damelio was sentenced to life in prison on Monday for the May 2018 killing and kidnapping of Burchard Mitchell in Aguilar.

Damelio, 22, was convicted by a Las Animas County jury of first-degree murder and first-degree kidnapping on August 7. Jury deliberation lasted less than an hour.

Mitchell’s body was found on May 9, 2018, near Las Animas County Road 43.7, south of Aguilar.

Several witnesses told police in 2018 that Mitchell was begging them for $120 in connection with drugs and was being held at gunpoint by Damelio.

Mitchell was shot nine times. Bullets found at the scene were matched to a .357 found on Damelio, according to the Third Judicial District Attorney. Damelio was arrested on May 23, 2018 at his home in Trinidad.

A second person arrested in connection with the homicide, Angela Waln, was charged with conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit second-degree murder, conspiracy to commit first-degree kidnapping and unrelated drug charges.
