The case of the unattended death of an unidentified male party whose body was found in the basement of a vacant building near Kit Carson Trail just after 9 p.m. on Wednesday, July 10 may have been the result of foul play. County Coroner Dominic (Junie) Verquer said in a Friday, July 12 phone call that authorities hoped to have more information about the case after an autopsy was completed on the body on Sunday, July 14.
“This death of an unknown person definitely appears to be suspicious, though we won’t have any idea of the cause of this man’s death until after an autopsy has been completed,” Verquer said. “The person had apparently been deceased for several weeks. We should have a better idea about this man’s identity after the autopsy is completed.”
County Sheriff’s Deputies were conducting security checks of a vacant building near Kit Carson Trail in Trinidad, when deputies found a deceased male individual in the basement of the building, according to a Thursday, July 11 Sheriff’s Office press release. The matter is being investigated by the Sheriff’s Office as an unattended death, with the identity of the decedent currently unknown, pending an autopsy. “It should be noted that, at this time, preliminary investigation shows that this case does NOT appear to be related to other missing person’s investigations that the Las Animas County Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating,” according to the press release.
At this time, no further information is being released.
