Basketball camp

Popular coaching sister duo Ashleigh Ackerman and Payden Goldberg will return to host the 4th annual Today is the Day basketball camp August 5-7 at the Trinidad Community Center.

Trinidad natives and sisters, Ashleigh Ackerman and Payden (Ackerman) Goldberg will return again this summer to host the fourth annual “Today is the Day” basketball camp August 5-7.

This year the camp, which has generally focused on female student-athletes, is adding an elementary age session for both boys and girls, which will begin at 8 a.m. and run until Noon.

According to information for the camp, the elementary group will run from 8 a.m. to Noon for children entering first through fourth grades.  An afternoon session will be from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. for all incoming fifth, sixth, seventh and eight-grade girls only.

Both camps will be held at the Trinidad Community Center.

“Coaches will not only spend time focusing on the fundamentals of the game, but also on the impact that character and decision making can have on one’s life, family, social circle and community,” said the sisters in an email.

“Our heart for this project has grown exponentially over the past four years. We are really excited about the opportunity to be in Trinidad again this summer,” Ackerman shared. “This is such an impressionable time in a child’s life and we want to make sure everyone has a positive and uplifting experience.” Goldberg added, “The game of basketball has brought so many wonderful people and opportunities in our lives and it fills our hearts with joy to use that platform in a way that hopefully creates that same experience for the youth of our community. We look forward to this camp every summer and it is humbling to see the growth in each camper in such a short amount of time.”

Currently, Goldberg is entering her third year as the varsity head coach for Sand Creek High School girls’ basketball program and is the Director of Hardwood at The Arena, a performance training facility in Colorado Springs.

Ackerman is entering her sixth season with the Colorado School of Mines Women’s Basketball program, an NCAA Division II school in Golden and is currently an assistant coach and camp director.
