The Trinidad Community Foundation (TCF) began searching for inspiring youth leaders this past January to help form their first junior advisory committee known as JrCOMM.

JrCOMM will offer students in grades nine through 12 a chance to participate in a youth-led initiative designed to develop and sharpen their leadership skills through community service while also acting as ambassadors for TCF. This committee will elevate our youth’s voice as they contribute to TCF’s community outreach projects. Additionally, it provides a unique opportunity for the members to drive their own ideas from conceptualization to implementation and reflection.

JrCOMM will be encouraged to partner with like-minded youth from around the county to collaborate together on a professional platform. Members are selected through a comprehensive application process that allows the student to demonstrate their strong commitment to volunteerism, philanthropy and enhancing the quality of life here in Trinidad and Las Animas County.

Members will represent TCF and JrCOMM at community meetings and special events. Most recently, the Trinidad Chamber of Commerce proposed an opportunity for JrCOMM to organize the children’s games and activities for Santa Fe Trail Days 2020 on June 12 and 13.

“This group has so much to offer,” said TCF Executive Director Anita Flores. “Meetings are going very well and they are absorbing the formality of a board of directors with great interest and anticipation. While we were so impressed by their applications, they continue to do so through their suggestions, insight and level of maturity during their meetings.”

Students interested in applying can call TCF to speak to Flores. The next cycle for applications will run at the beginning of the 2020-21 school year. However, the current committee members would like to encourage any youth who would like to volunteer alongside JrCOMM at events like the Santa Fe Trail Days and Comcast Cares Clean Up Day scheduled for May 2, 2020 can do so.

If any non-profit or business would like to meet with JrCOMM or have them attend a meeting to gain insight from our youth’s perspective, contact TCF at 719-846-5940 or info@trinidadcf.org.
