What makes America great?

By Sofia Sinda

“Freedom, Liberty, Beauty. What comes to mind when you hear these words? For me, these words represent the greatest country of all: America.

One of the components that makes America great is how America was created. The founders of America had numerous principles in mind when they created America, and one of the most important was Popular Sovereignty. This principle means that the people have ultimate power, which makes America very unique from many other 4overnments. We as the people have many ways to participate in our government such as voting, and through voting, we are ultimately in power.

Another principle that our government was founded on is the System of Checks and Balances.  This principle allows one branch of the government to check another branch. For example, the executive branch can check the legislative branch by vetoing a proposed bill, and similarly, the judicial branch can check the legislative branch and can declare a law unconstitutional by the process of judicial review. This prevents one branch from overpowering another, so everyone stays in check.

Federalism is also very important. Federalism is the principle that makes the powers of our government shared between the states and federal government. This is important because it keeps the federal government from becoming too strong and creates diversity among the states.

One of the greatest aspects of America is that we have many freedoms guaranteed in the Bill of Rights-freedoms that people in many other countries don’t have.  For example, we take advantage of freedoms every day that others do not have — such as the freedom of speech.  Another great freedom that we have in this country is the freedom of religion. I think that it is amazing that every person in this country has the choice to follow whatever religion he or she feels is right.

There are also elements of the country that are great other than just our government. Another wonderful part of this county is how beautiful it is. There is a climate for every person’s preference, or if your health requires a certain climate, there are many options. If you like hot and humid weather, you can live in Florida. If a snowy, mountainous climate is more your type, then Colorado might be your place. If you prefer dry, hot deserts, then Arizona is the perfect place for you.

In America, we also have many world-famous places to visit, both natural and manmade.  Yellowstone National Park, The Grand Canyon, and Everglades National Park are all examples of beautiful natural wonders that are very distinct, but part of this magnificent country. Some of the man-made attractions include the famous Statue of Liberty, the Golden Gate Bridge, and Disneyland Park, which are all man-made landmarks that are visited by millions of people around the world.

Another great feature of this country are the opportunities that we all have. Here in America it is amazing that no matter where you come from in life, you can rise to the top. Every child has the opportunity to go to school and receive an education through public schools. And everyone can go to college because of scholarships.

This is an amazing country that is made up of incredible people and wonders. I think that America is the greatest nation on earth.”
