Look out for the bears on Cordova Pass

On a recent trek up West Spanish Peak Trail to Cordova Pass, local residents Sharon Sorenson and Ernie Parker happened upon this big guy making the most of a beautiful Colorado day. It’s not unusual to see black bears all over Las Animas County, but this cinnamon-colored black bear seemed happy to step out and pose for a close-up shot before lumbering back off into the forest. Interested in taking this hike? The easiest way to find the trailhead is to go to Main Street in Aguilar and head South on San Antonio Avenue, which becomes County Road 43.7. Stay on this road through Gulnare where it becomes County Road 46 for 15.5 miles until you see the turnoff for the trailhead.
