Four new cases of COVID-19 were reported in Las Animas County by the district health department over the weekend.

Three of the cases had close contact to a previous case. The fourth case was reported in an 86-year-old man that is not related to previous cases. He has been hospitalized with symptoms.   

The other positive tests were from a 43-year-old female, a 33-year-old male and a 14-year-old female.

The positive test results were received from July 25-26.

Average case growth of coronavirus has been on the rise, both state and nationwide. Las Animas County has recorded 17 total cases to date and the district health department says seven of those cases are “active.”

“All positive individuals are in isolation and close contacts have been notified to quarantine except one case, who is hospitalized,” wrote the department.

On July 26, the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) reported 44,336 tested positive for the disease caused by novel coronavirus, COVID-19. That was up from 43,789 the day prior. CDPHE reported 1,794 deaths among people with COVID-19 with 1,661 deaths due to COVID-19.

The Las Animas Huerfano County District Health Department used Sunday’s announcement to “(encourage) community members to have meaningful conversations with friends and family about taking care of one another through COVID, and addressing individual responsibility and decisions that will translate to keeping the community healthy.”

Public Health Director Kim Gonzales stated, “Kindly discussing how someone’s actions can affect you and your community’s health, can strengthen a sense of responsibility and accountability during these unprecedented times. Having these sincere and personal conversations is difficult, but can bring our community closer together and support one another through this.”

The health department also presented the “Five Commitments of Containment,” which includes the following:

1) Wear a mask

2) Maintain six-feet of physical distance

3) Minimize group size

4) Wash hands frequently

5) Stay home when sick and get tested
