The district health department announced five new positive cases of COVID-19 in Las Animas County late Thursday afternoon, the largest single day number for the county since the pandemic began.
Of the five newest cases one, a male in his 40s, has been hospitalized. The others, two males and two females in their 50s-60s are reportedly recovering at home. The county is currently tracking eight active cases.
Concurrent to Thursday’s announcement the department also reported a “possible community exposure to COVID-19 at The Park Café,” in Trinidad after two employees there tested positive for COVID-19.
“Anyone who visited The Park Cafe between Tuesday, Sept. 29 and Wednesday, Oct. 7 should monitor themselves for symptoms of COVID-19 for at least 14-days after being at the location,” said Las Animas Huerfano Counties District Health Department Director Kim Gonzales. “The Park Café is following public health guidelines to clean and disinfect their business and assist in the contact tracing. We appreciate their cooperation and concern for their community,” said Gonzales.
The department said the outbreak was confirmed Thursday, Oct. 8 and The Park Café has closed for 72 hours for a thorough cleaning and disinfection before reopening.
Said the department, “Individuals who were at The Park Café during the noted time frame, showing any symptoms, even mild, should remain at home, contact their health care provider and get tested.”
This is the third “outbreak” (defined as two, or more, cases of COVID-19 from a location) in Las Animas County. The first was at the Mt. San Rafael Hospital construction site where there have been eight “lab” confirmed cases of COVID-19. The second is a trucking company with two confirmed cases.
Also on Thursday, the local health department along with the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment opened the first free COVID-19 drive-through testing site in Las Animas County. The site will be open on Tuesdays and Thursdays through the month of Oct. from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. The testing site is located at the Las Animas County Justice Center at 2309 E. Main St. in Trinidad.
In Huerfano County the health department reported the case of a woman in her 80s as the latest to test positive for COVID-19.
A testing site was also recently operated in Huerfano County. “This additional case is not a case identified out of the Community Testing Site last week,” said the health department. “So far we have only seen three positives come out of the Community Testing Site out of 871 people who were tested. Two of those cases were not counted toward the Huerfano County case count. At this time we are still awaiting some test results to come back from the state lab. Once they are all in we will notify the community.”
Las Animas County has now seen 34 total cases of COVID-19, while Huerfano County has recorded 27. There are currently six active cases in Huerfano County.
