With three track meets under its belt so far this spring, the Primero High School track team is building momentum as it works to, once again, qualify runners for state.
This year’s team consists of freshmen Shelby Marsh, Sarah Bourassa, Dalton Avis, Justice Boyd, Colten Dunlap, and Lincon Woodruff; juniors Andrew Lutz, Connor Lutz, Sam Lobato, and Kimberlee Riggins; and seniors Michael Duran, Joey Dunlap, Nora Kinnison, and Dominique Quezada.
The Primero track team started their season on March 16 at the Pueblo Cenntennial Larry Pickering Invitational. The top finisher for Primero was Michael Duran, who placed 24th in the 1600 meter run and 18th in the 800 meter run.
On March 23, the team competed in the Lamar Invitational. The top finisher was again Michael Duran, with a sixth place finish in the 1600 meter run and a fifth place in the 800 meter run.
On Saturday, March 30 the team traveled to Monte Vista for the Center Invitational. The top finisher was Michael Duran who placed third in the 1600 meter run and fifth in the 800 meter run. Andrew Lutz placed sixth in the 1600 meter run and ninth in the 800 meter run. Dalton Avis placed eighth in the 1600 meter run. Sam Lobato placed ninth in the shot put.
“The team this year is young, with the exception of Michael Duran, Andrew Lutz, Connor Lutz, Kimberlee Riggins and Dominique Quezada,” says head track coach Mike Duran.
“For all the other member of the team, this is their first year in track. We have three returning state qualifiers: Michael Duran, Andrew Lutz and Connor Lutz. The team’s main goal is to improve every week and qualify for State.”
