On Saturday, March 9, Gabe Sintas, the 11-year-old son of Dickie and Alicia Sintas, traveled to Greeley Colorado to compete at Highland Park Bowling Center in the Pepsi Youth Championship Scratch Tournament where he took first place.
The tournament required Sintas to bowl six games across six sets of lanes, all with different oil patterns. Sintas was more than up to the challenge and tallied scores of 159-122-111-155-194 and 144 to place first in his division against several other boys and girls. The 194 score in Sintas’ fifth game was definitely eye-catching to the more seasoned bowlers at Trinidad Lanes.
Trinidad Lanes owner and bowling coach Matt Salbato said Sintas is an excellent youth bowler, especially considering his age. “He is very competitive and very athletic for his age,” said Salbato. “We’ve given him a few tips (on tournament bowling). He tends to rush a little, so we work on slowing him down. When he slows down he bowls much better.”
With the victory in Greeley, Sintas has qualified for the state championship on Saturday, April 6 in Longmont. If he finishes in first place there, he will qualify for the Junior Gold Championship in Detroit where a $3,000 scholarship could be on the line.
Sintas bowls regularly in the youth league at Trinidad Lanes.
When asked what kind of chance Sintas had at state Salbato said, “I think his chances are pretty good. I know he is pretty focused on it right now. That’s all he needs.”
