Now that Russia has withdrawn its troops from Kyiv to concentrate its invasion in the East, Ukrainians are returning to their homes in the capital city. In spite of continued air strikes on the city and the mayor’s warnings not to return, thousands are making the dangerous journey every day.

William (Bill) Simpson - age 92 - passed into heaven to join his wife (Virginia), on April 23, 2022. A long time resident of Trinidad, he lived the last six years at the Trinidad Inn Nursing Home.

Man arrested for burglary after Indiana Street home invasion

Local police arrested a Trinidad man on suspicion of first-degree burglary and other charges after responding to a home invasion on Sunday, April 24. Trinidad Police Department arrested Craig Steven Gavett (41) on suspicion of first-degree burglary (a class three felony), harassment (a class three misdemeanor) and criminal mischief (a class one petty offense) — after making contact with him inside of a residence in the 600 block of South Indiana Avenue.

It’s springtime in the Rockies — Colorado’s bears are waking up, so do your part to reduce conflicts in 2022

DENVER — With spring upon us, Colorado Parks and Wildlife reminds citizens and visitors that bears are emerging from hibernation and beginning their search for food. CPW has already received reports of bear activity in 14 Colorado counties this year.

Area crime, emergency report for April 14 — April 26

Trinidad Police Department responded to or initiated some 495 calls between April 14 and April 26 including a house fire, shots fired and a home invasion. The Las Animas County Sheriff’s Office responded to or initiated some 114 calls between April 14 and April 20, including an accident, suspicious incidents, fireworks and sexual misconduct. The Sheriff’s Office call logs for last week were not available before press deadline.
