On Memorial Day, we stand in a sacred space in cemeteries across eastern Colorado and honor those who have passed before us, as they rest in peace. Many of these individuals were family members and friends who were a part of our lives and lived our communities and who helped us grow and taught us about living in this great country where freedom abounds.

Las Animas County ranked 9th for least tax burdened Colorado counties

Las Animas County has earned the designation of being one of the lowest tax burdened counties in Colorado in 2021, for at least the sixth time, according to the latest report from Smart Asset. Las Animas County ranked 9th last year, out of 64 counties, for being the least tax burdened county — when accounting for income, sales, property and fuel taxes.

Trinidad School Board recommends consolidation plan to administrators

Trinidad’s school district consolidation saga continued during a work session Wednesday. The Trinidad School District No. 1 Board of Education recommended one of four proposed plans to district administrators.
The TSD1 Board of Education recommended a consolidation plan that proposes the utilization of both the 1911 portion of the Trinidad Middle School building and the Park Street portion of the building.

Calling all rural artists: Multi-media submissions requested for rural art show to be held this summer

Rural artists will have another avenue to share their work this summer with the opening of the Rural Art Show, currently accepting submissions for review. Kaylinn Gilstrap, an artist who grew up on the JL Cattle Company ranch in Branson before moving to Atlanta, Georgia, for 17 years, is currently working to curate a two-week art show to be held in the ranching town of some 64 residents.
