Area fire personnel responded to a grass fire on Interstate 25 near mile marker 20 just north of the El Moro Rest Area Sunday afternoon, according to the Hoehne Fire Protection District. Multiple HFPD units responded, along with units from Spanish Peaks Bon Carbo Fire Protection District, Fishers Peak Fire Protection District, Fort Carson Fire Department, Trinidad Fire Department, Colorado Department of Parks and Wildlife, the Colorado Department of of Transportation, Las Animas County Sheriff’s Department, Colorado State Patrol, the BSNF railroad and the Las Animas County Road & Bridge Department.

With every kind of wonderful, plump berry available in the grocery store these days — strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, blueberries — it can only mean one thing. It’s got to be shortcake time. Because this is a perfectly spectacular dessert for spring and summer, I can’t pass the berry isle these days without snagging a variety of cartons to enjoy.
