As fall approaches hyperphagia begins — state bear activity increases in preparation for winter hibernation

Colorado Parks and Wildlife Black bears in Colorado are entering hyperphagia and will spend up to 20 hours a day trying to eat more than 20,000 calories to fatten up for winter. As bears start to prepare for hibernation and hunt for food, Coloradans may see more bear activity in urban areas.

Local animal shelter sees overflow of pets in line with nationwide issue

Benjamin Mandile A local animal shelter said it continues to experience a backlog and overcrowding at its Trinidadbased shelter after it first started noticing the issue this past spring. Noah’s Ark Animal Welfare Association, an animal welfare nonprofit based in Trinidad, announced in mid-July that it would move to appointment only and not be taking in any more animals until further notice.
