Coloradans can defer payment on a big chunk of their rising property tax bill — here’s how to do it

Many Coloradans’ property tax bills are spiking because of rising home values across the state, but there is a way to put off a big hit to your wallet happening all at once. The legislature passed a measure in 2021 aiming to ease the financial burden by letting people defer payment on some of what they owe on their primary residence, starting in the 2023 tax year.

Crime report for Jan. 26 — Feb. 8: Incidents include accidents, shoplifting, hit and runs

The Trinidad Police Department responded to or initiated some 422 incidents between Thursday, Jan. 26, and Wednesday, Feb. 8, including accidents, shoplifting, hit and runs and welfare checks. The Las Animas County Sheriff’s Office saw some 101 incidents between Jan. 26 and Feb. 1, including cattle issues, harassment, agency assist and an auto fire. LASO call logs for Feb. 2 through Feb. 8 were not immediately available.

DENVER — Colorado Parks and Wildlife has identified several cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in free-ranging wildlife. A black bear from Huerfano County was affected by the disease in October, a skunk from Weld County was found to be positive for the disease in November, and a mountain lion that died in Gunnison County was recently confirmed to have the disease (dead geese in Trinidad were also confirmed to have had the virus as of late Thursday).

Bathroom Peeping Tom stuns retirement home employee

DEAR ABBY: Something happened at work that has me traumatized. I work at a retirement house for a convent. The nuns are sweet, kind and easy to get along with. But last week while I was using the bathroom, a nun decided to be a Peeping Tom while I was on the toilet. She laughed at me in a taunting manner saying, “I can see you!” I screamed at her to stop, but she just kept looking and laughing at me. When she finally left, I was in shock.
