What it takes to stop misinformation

When supporters of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro stormed the country’s Congress, comparisons were made to the 2021 US Capitol Building riot. Like the American attack, the invaders were extremists acting in the name of an ousted right-wing president and — in both cases — the insurrections came following elections rife with misinformation.

Crime report for Feb. 9 — Feb. 21: Incidents include hit and runs, fights, accidents, SAFE2TELL tips, assault, drugs

The Trinidad Police Department responded to or initiated some 422 calls for service between Thursday, Feb. 9, and Tuesday, Feb. 21, including warrant arrests, trespassing, assault, drugs and vehicle accidents. The Las Animas County Sheriff’s Office saw some 221 incidents during that time, including drugs, harassment, restraining order violations, numerous traffic stops and a pursuit.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife asks legislature for $2.2 million to bolster struggling Keep Colorado Wild Pass rollout

The rollout of the Keep Colorado Wild Pass is not going as smoothly as planned. Colorado Parks and Wildlife is hoping state lawmakers will give the agency a $2.2 million cash infusion to cover unanticipated costs in the agency’s campaign to sway vehicle owners to not opt out of the additional $29 fee with their annual registration.

Parents fall short on promises to help their ailing daughter

DEAR ABBY: I suffer from a debilitating, rare, chronic illness. Two years ago, my parents convinced me to move across the country to live with them in a city I’ve never lived in. They promised it would be “only for a year,” they’d pay the cost of moving and finance a “year of wellness.” I was to receive acupuncture, massage therapy, physical therapy, help from doctors, a personal trainer, etc.

New Colorado wildfire report calls for constant disaster funding, liability protection

To help watersheds recover quickly from catastrophic wildfires, federal and state funds need to be available continuously, rather than on an as-needed basis, and water districts and local governments need to be shielded from the liability that normally comes when working with federal wildfire recovery programs, according to a new report.
