Colorado began collecting a 2-cent-per-gallon fee on gasoline purchases on April 1. Revenue from the fee, which increases to 3 cents per gallon on July 1, will go toward addressing the state’s multibillion-dollar transportation project backlog.
The Commons at Space to Create, which opened last fall, hosted a free marketing event as part of a series of small business seminars for county businesses. The one-day event, held March 28, saw over 30 Trinidad and Las Animas County small business owners, members of the Trinidad & Las Animas County Chamber of Commerce and other business professionals, and focused on “creating an effective brand.” Jeff Montoya, a local musician and owner of Picketwire Media presented the topic.
On Saturday, April 8, The Lords Chapel in Segundo hosted its annual Easter egg hunt for children. Organizers of the event said over 1,100 Easter Eggs filled with candy were hidden around the chapel and on the grounds outside. Southern Colorado officials are pushing back on a bill working its way through the Colorado General Assembly that, if approved, could have cumbersome requirements for Trinidad to remain in compliance and would pull landuse decisions away from local control.

Joann D James age 81 passed away unexpectly on the morning of March 20, 2023 in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Joann was born in Trinidad, Colorado on Jan 3, 1942 to Joe and Theresa Rivera. She attended Trinidad High School and after completing her schooling she went to work at Mt San Rafael Hospital in Trinidad, Colorado, transferring to Penrose Hospital in 1968. Joann was united in marriage to John R James on September 1969 at the Holy Trinity Church in Trinidad, Colorado. They were married for 54 years. During that time she was employed at Penrose Hospital, Health South Rehabiration, and Springs Nursing
Irvin “Wayne” Shupe was born in Moab, Utah on July 9, 1949 and peacefully passed away on March 22, 2023. He was born to Colleen LaRay (Shupe) Gaskins and Ivan “Ike” Shupe.
