Trinidad police discover homemade explosive device in ‘Hello Kitty’ backpack following investigation of motorcycle theft: two arrested  

On Sunday, June 15, Trinidad Police officers, following an investigation of a motor vehicle theft, discovered a suspected homemade improvised explosive device in a “Hello Kitty” backpack, leading to the apprehension of two, according to court documents.

Trinidad Housing Authority considers potential acquisition of former Phil Long Dealership property 

Phil Long Dealerships announced in early May that it would officially close its dealership location in Trinidad on the first of the following month. On June 11, just 10 days after the site officially closed, the Trinidad Housing Authority discussed the potential acquisition of the former dealership property for a new admin building and shop, along with a High St. Property to add additional units to its 198-unit roster.

21-year-old Trinidad man faces list of charges, a $52,000 bond, following multiple alleged domestic incidences in 21-month span  

Antonio Mejia, 21, had been racking up domestic-related charges, on multiple incidences, since September 2023, with his most recent apprehension on Jun. 6, 2025, which saw the Trinidad man sitting in the Las Animas County Detention Center under a $52,000 bond.

CCHN honors Rep. Winter with Heath Center Champion Award for legislation, advocacy, supporting community health centers 

On Monday, June 16, the Colorado Community Health Network announced that Representative for House District 47, Ty Winter, would receive its 2025 Community Health Center Champion award for his sponsorship of HB25-1288 and support for the amendment to the Long Bill to invest in the Primary Care Fund, which advocates say would support acquisition of funding for community health centers.

Opioid crisis spills into Trinidad City Hall as concerned citizens voice concerns regarding distribution of drug paraphernalia, ‘hit kits’ throughout city

On June 17, citizens took to the Trinidad City Hall, during the city council’s regular meeting public comment section, to voice their concerns over the distribution of drug paraphernalia within the city, urging council to make a difference.

Rep. Winter talks ‘successful’ 2025 legislative session, bridging rural needs with state statute 

Despite a Democrat majority in the House and Senate, Republican state representative for Colorado’s House District 47, which includes counties such as Las Animas, Otero, Huerfano, and Bent, Ty Winter, was able to pass key pieces of legislation, which he claimed would benefit the communities and people he represents.
