Trinidad library works to improve internal climate control

Patrons of the Trinidad Carnegie Public Library can expect improved climate conditions at the local library after it completes a project to address deficiencies in its HVAC system. The system, which has reportedly not been replaced since before October 2020, has failed at times, leading to closures of the library for small spurts on extreme cold and extreme heat days, according to Jessica Huffman, TCPL director.

Chili peppers more deeply rooted in Colorado than previously thought

Botanists and paleontologists, led by researchers from CU Boulder, have identified a fossil chili pepper that may rewrite the geography and evolutionary timeline of the tomato plant family. The team’s findings, published last month in the journal New Phytologist, show that the chili pepper tribe (Capsiceae) within the tomato, or nightshade (Solanaceae), family is much older and was much more widespread than previously thought.

CDOT winter impact funding could benefit SE region, allocations remain up in air

Colorado’s transportation department is “redoubling” its efforts to improve and maintain roads across the state after it received $45 million from the Transportation Commission of Colorado. The increased funding comes after the state exits one of the snowiest winters of the last 50 years, with statewide snowpack averaging 150% of normal, the Colorado Department of Transportation said in a release announcing the funding.

NM Health Department issues warning about Hantavirus detections

The New Mexico Department of Health issued an advisory warning residents about the increased number of Hantavirus cases being detected within the state. Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS) has been detected in five people in New Mexico in 2023, compared to just one detected case in 2020 and 2021, respectively, and two detected cases last year, according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and NMDOH data.

Trinidad dissolves tourism board, creates tax advisory board

The Trinidad Tourism Board in its current form has been dissolved and has been replaced with an advisory board with expanded allowances for utilizing the city’s lodging tax. TrinidadCityCouncilapproved the dissolvement of the board, and the creation of the Lodging Tax Advisory Board 7-0 Tuesday, paving the way forward for the city to revamp its efforts to improve Trinidad.
