New laser-based breathalyzer sniffs out COVID, other diseases in real-time

With each breath, humans exhale more than 1,000 distinct molecules, producing a unique chemical fingerprint or “breathprint” rich with clues about what’s going on inside the body. For decades, scientists have sought to harness that information, turning to dogs, rats and even bees to literally sniff out cancer, diabetes, tuberculosis and more.

Trujillo Fire: 10% contained, crews to run helo attack until winds prohibit

Wildland firefighter crews battling a fire in Trujillo Creek have contained 10% of the fire and have containment line around the entirety of the fire, according to a Thursday briefing from Las Animas County Emergency Management. The fire has grown to 120 acres, according to a Wednesday night infrared flight, and additional hotshots from Sacramento, Calif., were expected to be arriving on site Thursday — raising the firefighter count on the incident to around 100 people.

Crime report for April 6 — April 12: Incidents include at-large dogs, vehicle accidents, menacing, lost gun

The Trinidad Police Department responded to or initiated some 280 calls for service between Thursday, April 6, and Wednesday, April 12, including a lost gun, menacing, vehicle accidents and harassment. The Las Animas County Sheriff’s Office saw some 157 incidents during the same time, including fraud, burglary, a vehicle accident and fires.

Trinidad woman expects to take plea deal in arson case, next court appearance pushed to early-May to finalize paperwork

The woman who stands accused of setting fire to a Trinidad chiropractor’s office in a reported act of retaliation against her exboyfriend is expected to take a plea deal, although the finalization process saw a delay at the request of her defense. Sherry Abeyta, age 44, is expected to take a plea deal later this spring, according to her attorney, although the prosecution and defense did not have the paperwork for the court during her latest hearing.
