Landmark study on history of horses in American West relies on indigenous knowledge

A team of international researchers has dug into archaeological records, DNA evidence and Indigenous oral traditions to paint what might be the most exhaustive history of early horses in North America to date. The group’s findings show that these beasts of burden may have spread throughout the American West much faster and earlier than many European accounts have suggested.

Survey: 65% of respondents believe Trinidad Riverwalk is ‘unsafe’

A “riverwalk safety survey” issued by the City of Trinidad as part of an ongoing effort to make improvements to the Trinidad Riverwalk found a majority of respondents feel the multi-use pathway is “unsafe.” The city ran the survey during the last two weeks of January, garnering 188 responses — according to the city’s grant writer, who helped facilitate the survey — and the city understands it is not a statistically significant survey. “I wouldn’t even want to guess if that’s the sentiment of our entire community,” said Trinidad City Manager Steve Ruger.

FLAGLER — On the caretaker’s property adjacent to the local state wildlife area, sheets of structural steel, once blanketed by snow but now tickled by tumbleweeds, sit stacked on the ground awaiting their eventual transformation. Inside a nearby outbuilding sits the finished product the raw materials soon will replicate, once it’s their turn to be cut, welded and shaped into a contraption state officials have been craving for years: a better, lighter, more versatile bear trap.

Crime report for March 23 — March 29: Incidents include at-large dogs, harassment, shoplifting

Trinidad Police Department responded to or initiated some 166 calls for service between Thursday, March 23, and Wednesday, March 29, including harassment, shoplifting, theft, and at-large dog issues. Call logs for March 27 were not available before deadline. The Las Animas County Sheriff’s Office saw some 154 calls during the same time, including trespassing, DUI and accidents.

Community leaders ‘champion’ TSC Region IX champions during community celebration

Trinidad — the “City of Champions” — celebrated a group of newly minted champions during a community celebration to highlight the mind-blowing feat of the Trinidad State College Men’s Basketball team taking the Region IX title for the second year in a row, and their overall smashing success of a season.
