Initial Mary John Goree Scholarship winners announced final class in May

The Mary John Goree Las Animas County Scholarship Foundation, which awards funding to students seeking higher education, announced its initial winners of the 2022-2023 Mary John Goree Las Animas County Scholarship. Landon Knight (Goal High School), Sun Richardson (Goal High School) and Ava Warner (Fountain Valley School) were all named as initial winners of the scholarship.

Lower unemployment, inflation gives Colorado favorable economic, budget forecast

Colorado’s state economists gave favorable reports on employment and inflation but expressed concern about the risk of recession during last Thursday’s Joint Budget Committee hearing. Contractor completes $12.6M Exit 11 improvements to improve traffic flow, state park access, safety

Improvements to Exit 11 on Interstate 25 are complete, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation, allowing for an improved traffic flow and pedestrian safety — as Las Animas County sees tourism increase with expanded outdoor-recreation offerings, including Fishers Peak State Park.

DA dismisses all charges in LA County embezzlement case

A former employee of the Las Animas County Clerk & Recorders Office, who had been accused of embezzling nearly $40,000 of county funds through a transaction reversal scheme, saw those charges dismissed, after the Las Animas County District Attorney’s Office found it could not prove the charges beyond a reasonable doubt. Consuelo “Connie” Victoria Vigil (age 39), saw all charges dismissed, including theft over $20,000 while less than $100,000 (a class four felony), embezzlement of public property (a class five felony), abuse of public records (a class one misdemeanor) and first-degree criminal misconduct (a class two misdemeanor).

Several thousand Health First Colorado and Child Health Plan Plus members across Colorado will receive text messages from the state reminding them to check their eligibility status for the state’s health insurance program as renewal dates approach. The messages started Monday, March 20, and will continue throughout the year depending on renewal dates to avoid a gap in coverage for members, according to a release issued by the state.
