DA dismisses all charges in LA County embezzlement case

A former employee of the Las Animas County Clerk & Recorders Office, who had been accused of embezzling nearly $40,000 of county funds through a transaction reversal scheme, saw those charges dismissed, after the Las Animas County District Attorney’s Office found it could not prove the charges beyond a reasonable doubt. Consuelo “Connie” Victoria Vigil (age 39), saw all charges dismissed, including theft over $20,000 while less than $100,000 (a class four felony), embezzlement of public property (a class five felony), abuse of public records (a class one misdemeanor) and first-degree criminal misconduct (a class two misdemeanor).

Trinidad author named ‘Alignable Local Business Person of the Year’

A Trinidad science fiction author has been recognized on the national level, after being named the “Alignable Local Business Person of the Year.” Alignable.com, an online referral network for small businesses, named Trinidad author Adam Gaffen (Adam Gaffen, Author, LLC) as the network’s Local Business Person of the Year. The award, issued after a nationwide nomination process, is given to leaders “who’ve gone above and beyond guiding peers and supporting entire communities as many small businesses continue to combat major economic challenges,” the network said in a statement.

Cimino Park att. murder suspect plea hearing will cont. in April

A plea hearing for a Trinidad woman accused of attempted second-degree murder has been pushed to early-April to allow time for the defense to conduct further investigation into the incident. Melissa Lynn Almarez, age 38, appeared in-custody in Las Animas County District Court Tuesday, March 14, for a plea hearing, during which the defense asked for more time to investigate the case.

Trinidad leadership approves $359K in marijuana expenditures stemming from Q4 2022 taxes

Trinidad City Council issued its final approval of marijuana sales tax expenditures stemming from 2022 sales, approving some $359,000 in requested expenditures from Q4 2022 marijuana sales taxes. The city collected $509,768 in marijuana sales taxes during Q4 2022, a 44.5% year-overyear decline, and an 11.4% decline between Q3 2022 and Q4 2022, according to an analysis by The Chronicle-News.
