After inflation, the tight labor market, affordable housing, unfunded street and road maintenance needs, and unfunded water and wastewater improvements comprised the leading concerns. Even with additional infrastructure money coming from the federal government, respondents said the purchasing power of grants and loans are impacted by inflation.

Trinidad ups fees for special events, liquor licenses, first time since ‘07

Trinidad’s liquor application and special event permit fees are rising for the first time in over a decade, after Trinidad City Council unanimously approved the increase. City administrators sought the increase in fees — associated with issuing liquor licenses and special event permits — in an effort to recover its actual costs of issuing the licenses, Trinidad City Clerk Audra Garrett said.

New Mexico pot sales slump entering new year, Raton sales decline nearly 12%

Legalized pot sales slumped in New Mexico last month, after seeing a rise in revenue overall between November and December last year. New Mexico pot shops sold a total of $40,209,351.68 of marijuana last month, with the majority accounted for in adult-use sales, representing a nearly 7% decline month-over-month from December.

Central Park closes temporarily due to bird deaths, viral test results come back positive

Trinidad’s Central Park has been closed for public health reasons, until further notice, after numerous dead birds were found at the public park since last week. Trinidad City Manager Steve Ruger made the announcement during a city council meeting Tuesday night, as wildlife officials awaited test results from dead bird samples sent to Colorado State University.

DENVER — Colorado Parks and Wildlife has identified several cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in free-ranging wildlife. A black bear from Huerfano County was affected by the disease in October, a skunk from Weld County was found to be positive for the disease in November, and a mountain lion that died in Gunnison County was recently confirmed to have the disease (dead geese in Trinidad were also confirmed to have had the virus as of late Thursday).

Crime report for Jan. 26 — Feb. 8: Incidents include accidents, shoplifting, hit and runs

The Trinidad Police Department responded to or initiated some 422 incidents between Thursday, Jan. 26, and Wednesday, Feb. 8, including accidents, shoplifting, hit and runs and welfare checks. The Las Animas County Sheriff’s Office saw some 101 incidents between Jan. 26 and Feb. 1, including cattle issues, harassment, agency assist and an auto fire. LASO call logs for Feb. 2 through Feb. 8 were not immediately available.
