Bent County officials arrested a 67-yearolf Las Animas code enforcement officer in connection to the 3,000-acre Fort Lyon River fire that was sparked in April and destroyed two homes. Charles Champney faces several charges including reckless endangerment and firstdegree arson.

Trinidad City Council reviewed 18 project requests for utilizing marijuana sales taxes collected by the city during the first quarter of 2022 at a work session Monday. No official action has been taken on the requests and any approvals will need to be made by city council during a regular session.
ChelsaJoy Cabalka isn’t new to cutting and styling hair; she’s been doing it for nearly two decades, but she recently embarked on a new adventure. Cabalka opened Studio Joy, a high-end salon, in downtown Trinidad earlier this month — and has already seen success with local clientele.
The Trinidad Trolley returns to regular operation on Memorial Day and will run through Labor Day. The daily schedule for the trolley is 10 a.m.
Local law enforcement had a busy time this week; Trinidad Police Department responded to or initiated some 300 incidents between Thursday, May 19 and Wednesday, May 25, including a woman claiming to work for the CIA harassing and assaulting neighbors, multiple welfare checks and a burglary.
The Trinidad Triggers opening day is scheduled for June 3, but the team is still in search of host families to help house its players for the season. The team announced Monday that it is asking interested residents to reach out if they would like to volunteer to host a player for two months between June 1 and July 31.

Colfax County Sheriff’s Office announced Sunday that three communities previously under “Go” evacuation orders have been downgraded to “Set.” CCSO said that Hidden Lake, Black Lake Resort and Black Lake — all previously evacuated due to the Hermits Peak / Calf Canyon fires — were now under “Set” status and that residents could begin to repopulate the area 8 a.m. Sunday.
Despite competition being postponed a day due to weather conditions, the Primero Boys 4x800-meter relay team were able to run their relay race on Saturday night at the Colorado State Track and Field Championships at Jefferson County Stadium in Lakewood.
