Trinidad City Council passed an ordinance limiting the number of alcoholic beverage festivals on the city’s main thoroughfares and parks, after hearing mixed reactions to the proposal from numerous residents Tuesday, May 3.
At 8 p.m. on May 15, the sun will set and the moon will rise simultaneously. Over the next four hours a fascinating spectacle unfolds, a full lunar eclipse. The moon will be 100% full because it lies on the exact opposite side of the Earth from the sun. Most full moons, because the plane of the moon’s orbit around the Earth is tilted about five degrees from the plane of the Earth-moon system around the sun, there is no eclipse. Twice a year, when those planes intersect at the same point where the full moon occurs, eclipses happen. A lunar eclipse is when the moon travels through the shadow of the Earth.
One church called a new pastor who was not familiar with the traditions of the community. After the first “pot luck” dinner where the members pooled together their favorite casseroles, puddings and pies, he took his stand staunchly opposed to all forms of gambling. He began to rail from the pulpit against the very idea of a pot “luck” anything. The deacons and the women of the church got together and came up with an idea. “How about pot providence dinners?” This seemed to calm the theological storm so that everyone could once again enjoy the cooking.
Trinidad Police Department responded to or initiated some 313 incidents between Thursday, April 27 and Wednesday, May 4, including fights, an unattended death, accidents and a prowler. The Las Animas County Sheriff’s Office saw some 227 incidents in the same time period, including a missing person, injured person and an unattended death.
Las Animas County is under stage two fire restrictions after the county board of commissioners approved a resolution allowing for the enactment Tuesday. Under the amended fire restrictions, no open fires are permitted, “in an attempt to reduce the risk of forest and / or prairie fire to Las Animas County,” according to the resolution.

It’s that time of year again when the temperatures are rising — inviting people back out to the rivers and lakes dotting the area — leading to increased risk of water emergencies; and the Trinidad Fire Department plans to be ready for any water-based emergencies after recently receiving new training.
On Friday, April 29, more than 60 young artists displayed 88 art works at an evening art show at the A.R. Mitchell Museum. It was the first annual Trinidad Youth Art Show sponsored by the Art Council of Trinidad. The young artists ranged in age from five to 18, and their works spanned a variety of media — from masks to oil paintings.
