The first state championships of the spring sport season are less than a month away and everyone is gearing up for the stretch run. Eye-popping performances, both team and individual, continue to be a regular occurrence.
The last few weeks have brought a lot of challenges for area athletes, with the wind remaining at the forefront. Still, the competitors have been digging deep and continue to turn in noteworthy performances.
The Primero Bulldogs participated in their first track meet of the season at the Pueblo County Hornet Invitational in Pueblo on Saturday, April 2. For the girls’ 100-meter dash, junior Hailey Harris took 30th place with a time of 14.74 seconds, with senior Shelby Marsh coming behind her with a time of 17.35 seconds and a place of 55th.
The Primero Bulldogs competed in the Thunderstorm Invitational Track Meet held in Pueblo at the CSU-P campus on Saturday, April 9. Despite facing athletes from 4A and 5A schools, the Bulldogs were able to make themselves known in their events.
The weather finally cooperated this past weekend, and a majority of local athletes took advantage of the warmer conditions to turn in strong performances in several sports. That includes meet and school records falling in track.
Mother Nature continues to wreak havoc on the spring sports schedules, with more track meets and baseball games canceled last week. However, a number of contests were able to go on as scheduled, even if conditions were less than ideal.
High school varsity basketball teams from Hoehne, Kim/ Branson, Raton and Primero participated in postseason play last week, as all of these districts had teams advance to regional playoff games. Hoehne The 18-4 Hoehne Lady Farmers basketball team has had an incredible season.
The Primero boys basketball team faced off against the Wiley Panthers at the Region Six basketball tournament on Friday, March 4. The Bulldogs lost 47-30 in a third place finish at regionals, ending their basketball season.
LA JUNTA — It was a game for the ages. Two rivals fighting it out, point-for-point, in front of a packed house of excited fans, and the winner would claim the Region 9 title and a trip to the NJ- CAA National Basketball Tournament in Hutchinson, Kansas.
The Primero Bulldogs, with a 14-8 record, faced three district opponents this past week. The Bulldogs won the first game against the Manzanola Bobcats 43-36, lost the second game against the Springfield Longhorns 35-33 and won the final game against the La Veta Redhawks 41-38. Due to their win against the Bobcats and Redhawks, the Bulldogs advanced to regionals.
