A rendering from NASA

A rendering from NASA displaying asteroids and a satellite.

It seems like every day we read about some new asteroid about to hit the earth. Reports of asteroids bigger than the Great Pyramid of Giza or the size of the Empire State Building whizzing past Earth surfaced just a few weeks ago.

While it is true that there a lot more reports of new, “Potentially Hazardous Asteroids” (PHAs) than just a decade ago, but it is also true that many more — mostly automated — telescopes are searching for these objects.
