For years, volunteers in Las Animas County have gone out of their way to make area veterans, military personnel and their families feel honored and appreciated on their day. This year was certainly no different. The 2021 Veteran’s Day Luncheon was held at the Sebastiani Gym on Thursday, Nov. 11 in downtown Trinidad. The event saw attendance from veterans, spouses, current military members and local dignitaries. Speakers for the day honored and remembered those veterans who died this year, including the 13 military members who died during the evacuation of Afghanistan in August of this year.

Pictured are 1) Colonel Louis Simpleman (USMC retired) and his wife Jo Ann who are seen standing during the 2021 Veterans Day Luncheon. Simpleman said the event was “a great opportunity for the vets to get together.” 2) Sgt. Major Marcus Brister II, from Fort Carson, is seen here during veteran recognition during the 2021 Veterans Day Luncheon. His long list of military accomplishments were announced before he gave remarks to the crowd. 3) Trinidad Mayor Phil Rico is seen here giving a speech along with a prayer during the day’s event. 4) Las Animas County Judge John Mochel served as the master of ceremonies during the 2021 Veterans Day Luncheon. Due to COVID-19, it was the first one held since 2019. 5) Event volunteers, including Daughter’s of the American Revolution and students from Holy Trinity Academy, were organized by Linda Barron and served meals to a packed house. Every effort was made to make area veterans and their families feel honored and appreciated on their special day. The U.S. Army Band out of Ft. Carson was also on hand to help honor the vets.
