A Trinidad man accused of attempted first-degree murder for an incident in early-June of this year has taken a plea deal and has been sentenced to six years in the Colorado Department of Corrections.

Michael James Romero (35) took a plea deal last week in Las Animas County District Court that had him plead guilty to one count of second-degree assault – drugging a victim in a heat of passion and three counts of being a habitual offender (the prosecution proved the habitual offender charges). In return, the district attorney dismissed one count of attempted first-degree murder – after deliberation, one count of possession of a weapon by a previous offender, one count of illegal discharge of a firearm and one count of harassment – strike, shove, kick.
