The Purgatoire River

The Purgatoire River, which means “purgatory” in French, was named to commemorate Spanish explorers killed. It originates at the confluence of the North Fork Purgatoire and Middle Fork Purgatoire near Weston, Colorado.

Local irrigators shared their concerns about a proposed Purgatoire River visioning plan, citing fears of a loss of water and debris accumulation — but the creators of the proposed vision quickly addressed those concerns after further explanation of the plan.

The Greenway Foundation and the Architerra Group, Denver-metro-based companies contracted by the City of Trinidad to create a vision plan for making improvements to the Purgatoire River corridor, unveiled the preliminary plan at a final public meeting Thursday, Nov. 11 in front of about 50 locals — before it finalizes the plan for submission to the city by the end of the year.
