Tony Griego, 86, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by loved ones on November 16, 2022. He was born on February 27, 1936, in La Veta, CO to Abel and Geronima (Gurule) Griego.
Tony was best known for his service to our community as a bus driver. He drove a bus for the Southern Colorado Council of Governments for twenty years. After completing his career with COG, he drove a bus for the public schools for seventeen years. He had a special interest in classic cars in which he received several trophies for those he collected throughout the years. In his free time, he enjoyed spending time with his family, fishing and rooting for the Broncos every Sunday. Tony made friends with whomever he met. He took pride in assisting the elderly as well as children with special needs.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his son Anthony Griego, his siblings John Griego, Raymond Griego, Manuel Griego, Faustino Griego, Mary Lou Casillas, Lucy Romero and son-in-law Michael Sanchez.
Tony is survived by his wife of 51 years Helen, one daughter, Sherry Cordova, three sons, John “Bob” (Denise) Cordova, David (Kim) Cordova, and Michael Cordova, three sisters, Betty Martinez, Marcella Martinez, Dolores (Carmel) Cordova, and two brothers, Edward (Esther) Velasquez and Joseph (Nancy) Velasquez. He is also survived by his numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and special friends that he loved very dearly.
Pall bearers are Chris Sanchez, Jesus Cordova, Justin Cordova, Michael Cordova, Gerald Armijo, and Ted Griffis.
Honorary pall bearers are Jerry Romero, Ron Cruz, Ron Corral, Daniel Cordova, Carmel Cordova, and Anthony Amador.
Visitation was held from 3 to 7 p.m. on Monday, November 28 at Comi Funeral Home Chapel and followed by the Rosary at 7 p.m. Funeral Mass will be at Holy Trinity Catholic Church at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, November 29. Private inurnment will be held at a later date.
